A well-known philanthropist, director of the St. Petersburg theaters, IA Gagarin, together with the noble patrons in 1821, founded the Society for the Encouragement of Artists in St. Petersburg.
The Society organized exhibitions, contests, acquired works, sent artists abroad to continue education, awarded them medals; contributed to the liberation of serf artists.
