For this large canvas the Council of the Academy of Arts awarded the artist a great gold medal Prince Dimitry Ivanovich ruled Moscow after 1359g. He united the Russian soldiers to fight the Tatar horde of Khan Mamai.

On September 8, 1380, the Tatars suffered a crushing defeat in the Battle of Kulikovo Field, for which Prince Dimitry Ivanovich received the honorary nickname of Donskoy. 100 000 soldiers, led by Prince Dimitri, left the gates of the Kremlin to meet the enemy. They fought heroically on Kulikovo Field.

The prince went into battle, as a simple warrior, raising the morale of the army. The losses were huge, but the battle was won. Dimitry Donskoy was seriously wounded. The picture shows an episode when, after the battle, the people found the wounded prince among the dead.
