Portrait of MI Buteneva with her daughter by Karl Bryullov

The activities of Bryullov in Turkey were not limited to the creation of everyday scenes, portraits, landscapes. Feeling attracted to the theater, he took part in home – performances, arranged in the house of the Russian envoy A. P. Butenev. He gets acquainted with his family, and writes a watercolor portrait of the envoy’s wife, MI Buteneva and her daughter.

At the open balcony, bending to the cradle, Buteneva gently lifts up her little daughter. The charm of the appearance of the radiant joy of a young woman, the graceful ease of movement with which she reaches for an awakened child, are full of such human warmth that they turn the portrait into a picture of maternal happiness. Wealth of color shades, purity and airy tones make the watercolor portrait of Buteneva one of the most accomplished works
