This portrait is painted in Paris. The artist came there in early April 1822, this can be inferred from a letter sent from Paris by his friend, the architect F. F. Elson.
Another letter from the same Elson, dated August 18, 1822, speaks of the success enjoyed by Kiprensky’s work at the Paris exhibition. And more: “… He paints portraits very well here with pencil, he made Rostopchin, Orlov, Guriev, you know how skillfully he uses a pencil.”
