Both genres have not lost their leading position throughout the history of engraving. Their style changed, which was due to a variety of circumstances, most often related to the cultural life of the city, to the activities of so-called Ren – literary or poetic societies of citizens.

With the activities of one of these Rens is an event of extreme importance in the history of engraving. This is the “invention” of color printing at the turn of 1765 and 1766, traditionally associated with the name of Suzuki Harunobu. In fact, color printing was known much earlier – at least since the beginning of the XVII century. However, in the Ukiyo-e engraving this technique was used for the first time and in a mass circulation by Harunobu.
