This drawing was made during a trip to Mantua in December 1499 or early 1500. Isabella de Este had a reputation as a generous, somewhat capricious patroness of the arts. Portrait in profile – a tradition of portraiture of that time in Mantua.

This way of representing Isabella de Este is designed to convey the impression of inner self-control. Therefore, in this portrait, Leonardo avoided any disturbing elements, concentrating primarily on the details of the face. This drawing is a preparatory, for a picture in the same size. P

The most important contours were ruled out, which were then marked with pinpricks for accurate transfer to another surface. Clear pinpricks along the main lines indicate that the artist was already preparing to transfer the portrait to another surface. However, in all probability, the drawing was not transferred to the canvas, as Leonardo left for Venice in March 1500g, and in April – for Florence.
