Portrait of Ambrosia Wolmar Keller by Hans Baldung

Baldung Green uses his knowledge of the nature and skill of the draftsman also to create plot drawings on religious, mythological and fairy-tale themes, in which his inherent passion for fiction and fantasy is expressed. The strength of these drawings is their dynamism, skillful transmission of movements and bold angles, skill in the arrangement of figured groups. But at the same time they are under an unpleasant touch of exaggerated expressiveness, sometimes assuming a grossly physiological or erotic character.

The artist often returns to the motives for the death that abducts a woman, or the struggles that serve him for the transmission of a highly expressive gesture, often turning into grotesque and mannerisms. Next to the beautiful realistic portraits Baldung places such drawings, where he experiments on a human face, sometimes giving it a distorted, insane expression.
