The caryatids of Modigliani are not familiar to us graceful caryatids, supporting balconies and arches: its caryatids carry the whole weight of the universe on their shoulders.
Their spherical knees, their powerful, bent back hands, their convulsively rolled to the side of the head demonstrate the highest degree of physical tension. Someone said that the artist raised them to the heights of a religious symbol.
It probably is. This work was created by Modigliani in the midst of his fascination with sculpture. Traces of this hobby are clearly visible.
