The plot of Roman mythology. Jupiter was in despair – for a long time he could not talk to his beloved Io, nor return her human form. Then he asked his assistant Mercury to save Io.
Mercury learned that Juno had guessed all about it long ago and ordered her friend Argus to guard Io. Then Mercury took with him several poppy heads, came to Argus and invited him to listen to the tales that Mercury would tell him to pass the time. Everyone knew that Mercury was a well-known storyteller, and Argus gladly agreed. Mercury began to tell monotonously such long tales that Argus soon began to fall asleep and closed half of his thousand eyes.
Continuing to speak, Mercury carefully shook the makovki on the giant’s head, and soon all his eyes closed – he plunged into sleep. Then Mercury picked up the sword and cut off Argus’s head. Mercury helped Io escape, saving her from the angry Juno. Io fled to Egypt, swimming across the sea. Here Jupiter returned her human form, and she bore him the son of Epaphus – the first king of Egypt and the founder of Memphis. And Juno bitterly mourned the death of her faithful friend Argus. Gathering all his eyes in the basket, she attached them to the tails of her favorite peacock birds, so that they always reminded her of a devoted friend.
