The fortified city of Israel, Bethulia, located in the mountains, besieged the troops of the Assyrian king Nebuchadnezzar. They were commanded by the outstanding commander of Holofernes. He had already foreseen an early victory, but this was hindered by the rich widow Judith who lived in the city. Judith urged people not to surrender, encouraged them. as she could. and then she decided to save her city and the people besieged in it.
Judith was very beautiful and knew about her charms. She dressed in rich clothes and, along with her maid, went to the great commander Holofern, telling his servants that he was offering him gifts. Holofernes, seeing the beautiful Judith, at once flushed with love for her and invited him to the table. They talked for a long time, feasted. When night fell, Holofernes let his servants go. Drinking too much, he quickly fell asleep. Then Judith prayed, asking for forgiveness from the Lord, grabbed Holofernes by the head and struck the sword with all her strength at his neck. The blood spurted, and Holofernes’s head was in her hands.
Judith wrapped her head in the curtain and carried it out of the tent. Judith approached with a servant to the gates of his city and showed the besieged inhabitants the head of the cruel Holofernes. Delight and glee engulfed all the inhabitants of the city. And the Assyrian soldiers in the morning found the corpse of a decapitated commander. Panic terror seized the soldiers and, taking the body of Holofernes, they fled from the city of Vetluyus.
