Painting by Dutch artist Jacob van Ruysdael “In the Forest”. The size of the painting is 67.5 x 85 cm, oil on canvas. Ruysdal was born into a family of artisans and painters. His grandfather, Jacob de Goyer, was a carpenter, a specialist in mahogany, and lived in a small place near the Reisdal castle, twenty miles from Amsterdam. The Dutch cabinet maker Jacob de Goyer had four sons, and three of them changed their last name to van Reisdal in honor of the place of his birth.
The two sons of Jacob, Isaac and Salomon, chose painting as their vocation and from the mid-1610s began to live in Haarlem. The document, preserved in the archives of the city government of Haarlem, tells us that on November 12, 1628, widower Isaac Reisdal married Maiken Cornelisdochter as his wife.
It is believed that it was from this marriage that Jacob van Reisdal was born, although it is also quite likely that he could be born from the first wife of Isaac Reisdal. Unfortunately, there is no information about the name of this woman, the reasons and the date of her death.
