David and Goliath by Michelangelo Merisi and Caravaggio

The painting of the Italian painter Caravaggio “David and Goliath.” The size of the picture is 110 x 91 cm, canvas, oil. The client of the painting was Cardinal Scipione Borghese. According to the Bible, David and Goliath were famous ancient heroes; one future Jewish king, another Philistine giant, whose name is immortalized in the biblical account of Goliath’s battle with David.

Originally from Geth, Goliath belonged to the remnants of an ancient gigantic tribe of Rephaim. During the war of the Philistines with the Israelites in the reign of Saul, he terrified the Israeli army. Only the Jew of David who happened to be in the camp accidentally had the courage to come out against this terrible enemy, whom he struck with a stone from his shepherd’s sling. According to the biblical testimony, Goliath was the growth of “six cubits and span”, ie, more than four and a half meters.

The ancient writers mention people of almost the same gigantic growth. The weapons of Goliath are described in detail in the Bible. He was shackled from head to foot in military armor: he had a copper helmet on his head, and his body was clad in scaly armor, so his weight of armor was about 5000 shekels of copper or more than 81 kilograms, and one tip of his iron spear weighed 600 siclei, i. e., almost 10 kilograms. The sword of Goliath was later kept at the Tabernacle as a historical landmark.
