Vrubel was an excellent draftsman. He appreciated the ability to paint unusually high and often blamed modern artists for their disdainful attitude towards the drawing. Draw Vrubel always – drew accurately, accurately, in detail: as an example, his work “The Left Hand of the Artist”, 1882-83. Sometimes it seems that Vrubel’s graphics do not mix very well with his sweeping painting, but in fact all his picturesque “novelties” would be impossible without painstaking graphic work.
It is curious that in terms of drawing, the fate of the artist forms a composition ring: he once started drawing a picture, he completed his creative path with intensive drawing. The peak of these occupations falls on the “nomad” of Vrubel on psychiatric clinics – his drawings of this period differ not only in observance, but also in increased expressiveness, as, for example, the work “Bed”, 1903-04. Having treated the artist, Dr. F. Usoltsev recalled: “He created always, and creativity for him was as easy and necessary as breathing.”
