Abduction of Europe by Titian Vecellio

Abduction of Europe by Titian Vecellio

Year of Foundation: 1560-1562

This work is included in the famous series of seven paintings called “Poesies”. The painting depicts a famous scene from Ovid’s Metamorphosis, made for Philip II in Spain. In the foreground is Jupiter, in the form of a bull, grabbing the princess of Europe. Over the dark sea, he carries it to Crete.

This picture stands out from all the works of Titian with a multitude of diffuse twisted lines, which was not observed in his previous works, which were clear and realistic. In a sense, the Abduction became the prototype of Baroque works.
