The portrait comes from the Florentine collection of Contini-Bonacossi. In the collection of Kress since 1948. Before clearing was considered an old copy. Today, the authorship of Titian is recognized by most researchers. Ranucho Farnese – the youngest son of the Parma Duke Pier Luigi Farnese and grandson of the Roman Pope Paul III.

In 1542, the 12-year-old Ranuchcho was sent by Paul III to Venice as the Prior of the Order of Malta. Portrait of Ranuchcho, written by Titian, is mentioned by JF Leoni in a letter to Cardinal Alessandro Farnese of September 22, 1542
