Abduction of Dejanira by Guido Reni

Guido Reni – the famous master of the Bologna school of the Baroque era. After the artist’s death, his work was put on the same level as the work of Raphael, but with the advent of romanticism in the works of Reni, mannered artistry began to be seen.

In the sentimental religiosity and cold rationality of the late works of the master, they saw the features of an academicism, and for some time they were unjustly forgotten. Reni studied under D. Carlvart and L. Carracci, after whose death he headed the Bologna Academy.

The artist worked in Bologna, Rome, Naples. The most fruitful was the Roman period. Reni was fond of the art of Caravaggio, studied antique works and paintings by Raphael. In Rome, he created one of his most significant works – the ceiling in the Palazzo Rospiglioz Aurora. The images of the artist, created in the Roman period, are distinguished by sublime beauty, grace, light, almost floating movement.

The canvas “Dejanira, abducted by the centaur Nessom” refers to the period of creativity Renee, when in his art began to dominate the rational principle and sentimentalism. This dynamic, with a clear compositional composition of the picture – one of the most popular works of the artist.
