Pastel Lautrec often sketched. Much less often he used it to create finished works. The most famous pastel of the artist is the profile portrait of Vincent Van Gogh, written in 1887.
The portrait is made in an unusual manner for Lautrec. He used small, overlapping strokes in it, while for the majority of his drawings and paintings a broad and long stroke is characteristic. Perhaps this approach was provoked by the technique of Van Gogh himself, who at that time was writing small strokes. Sometimes Lautrec combined pastel with ink, pencil or as in the case of the picture “A Young Woman in Gloves”, chalk.
