Portrait of Vincent Van Gogh by Henri de Toulouse Lautrec

In the workshop of Cormon, in addition to the artist-symbolist Bernard, Toulouse-Lautrec became acquainted with Van Gogh. The personality of the genius won the young artist, and he decided to paint his portrait, which he called – “Portrait of Vincent Van Gogh.”

Using the technique of a separate brushstroke, the reception that highlights the work of Van Gogh, Lautrec created a canvas that almost completely corresponds both to the manner of painting of the master himself, and the color range corresponding to his canons. Imitating the style of the great Dutchman, Lautrec expressed a tribute to his talent.

In addition to the ideal repetition of the manner of writing, there is a distinct psychological component in the picture: despite the fact that the artist’s portrait is made in profile, Van Gogh’s nervous tension, his inner nervous state, is felt.
