Delacroix’s favorite plot is a storm and a lonely boat in a stormy sea. In the boat Jesus Christ with the apostles sails to the shore. A storm has begun, the stormy wind throws the boat from side to side, the green waves boil, boil, not letting go of the prey.
Someone is rowing, trying not to let the boat roll over. Here one paddle burst from his hands, he tries to reach him, risking falling into the water. Some shout, in desperation they call for help. And only Jesus Christ sleeps peacefully. Around his head there is a radiance that illuminates and beside sitting men. Jesus sleeps, and dreams him a beautiful dream. Which one? No one knows. But Christ knows one thing – the boat will float in spite of everything, and nothing will happen to them.
In general, although the picture is full of violent movement, alarming excitement – ahead of the dark clouds breaks through the light – the light of hope.
