Along with the icon “The Assumption of the Virgin”, “The Apostle Luke writes the image of the Virgin” – one of the earliest known works of Domenico Theotokopuli, known to us under the name El Greco. It was created while studying in the icon painting workshop on about. Crete.

This work was poorly preserved, part of the paint peeled off, but some areas remained intact. In fact, the face and part of St. Luke’s figure were lost, but in the good preservation there was a fragment of the icon with an easel, a box of paints on the bench under it.

On the icon of the brush El Greco, St. Luke is depicted in the process of working on the icon of the Hodegetria, which fully corresponds to the Byzantine canon. However, in the interpretation of the entire work, young Domenico admits more freedom.

In general, the icon “The Apostle Luke writes the image of the Virgin” can be regarded as a transitional work, which proves the influence of the ideas of the European Renaissance on the artist.
