In Babylon there lived a very rich man, Joachim, and he had a beautiful young wife, Susanna. Various distinguished and well-to-do townspeople visited Joachim to talk and hear advice. Once. when Joachim was not in the house, two judges from among the elders came to him. They decided to wait for the owner in the garden. Susanna did not know about the presence of strangers and decided to swim.
The elders saw her and both were inflamed with desire. Then they decided to seduce a young woman. They approached Susanna and began to persuade them to surrender, otherwise they would accuse her of betraying her husband and the boy.
But Susanna refused them and loudly screamed, then the elders also screamed, flung open the gate and informed the people who had fled to the noise that they had found Susanna with the boy who betrayed illegal love.
People believed the judges and led them to death. At that time the prophet Daniel came up to the crowd. He found out what was going on and decided to figure out the situation himself. Daniel asked the judges one by one, under which tree Susanna was giving in to love. One old man replied that he was “under mastic” and the other “under green.” So Daniel caught them in lies, called deceivers, who slandered the innocent. People realized that the elders had deceived them and acted with them the way they wanted to do with Susanna – they were stoned.
