The ceremonial bust of Peter, made like the busts of Roman emperors, was performed in the process of working on the monument to the emperor, for whose creation Rastrelli was invited to Russia.

The dynamic baroque composition of the bust is executed with an accentuated spatiality, with light and shade contrasts of plastics. The figure is full of intense dynamism, everything in it emphasizes the indomitable energy of an extraordinary person. On the chest and armor of the emperor are numerous bas-reliefs.

One of them depicts Peter the sculptor carving the statue – the symbol of the new Russia. Scenes of battles, talking about a vigorous foreign policy, hectic, draping shot up – all this is deeply connected with the main idea of the work to give a historically-truthful image of the converter of Russia.

The bust of Peter the Great is a version of the bronze original from 1723-1729 in the State Hermitage, executed by B.-K. Rastrelli.
