“Construction of ships” is a picture that is laconic in terms of composition and use of painting techniques. Bertha Morisot freely conveys the light-air effects of the gray sky, in some places brightening it with highlights. The logs in the foreground of the picture visually balance the composition.
In contrast to the usual “bourgeois” scenes characteristic of Bertha Morisot, the picture is addressed to the general public and speaks of the freedom of expression of the artist, whose “female” talent was recognized even by such a picky critic as Edgar Degas.
