New tasks required new artistic forms. In contrast to classicism, where the main drawing and contour were, and color and lighting played a secondary role, a complex play of light and shade, sharp glare, sonorous color effects appeared.
Already in the early “Self-portrait with brushes behind the ear” the main thing was to convey the tension state of the master in the process of work. The whites of the eyes glitter, the mouth is compressed, the bright spots of light on a very dark face are all unusual and new!
