The beginning of the 1890s is an important time in the formation of the creative individuality of Bakst: acquaintance in March 1890 with Alexander Benois, rapprochement with a circle of future miriskusnikov; successes at the exhibitions of the Society of Russian Watercolorists; euro-trip.
Under the influence of high European classics, the taste is formed, the skill of Bakst is perfected. In the “Self-portrait” of 1893, trying on the beret and blouse – the traditional costume of the artist-maestro, – the young artist seems to get used to the role of professional minister of music.
