Matisse began working on sculpture at the age of twenty and over the next three decades did not leave these classes, which were for him a kind of “rest” from painting, and laboratory research to help solve some of the problems of “building” shape and volume.
At the base of his view on the sculpture lay, in general, “pictorial” ideas, as evidenced by, for example, “Reclining Nude”, 1906.
The artist continued to search for a simple form in sculpture – let us recall at least the sculptural images of the head of Jeanette, created by Matisse in 1910-13. “Jeanette I” is made in a realistic manner, but later on the same head undergoes characteristic transformations, seeking to assume a more abstract form.
