In this scene, Masaccio describes two episodes narrated in Acts of the Apostles. After the crucifixion of Christ, his disciples under the leadership of the apostle Peter led the early Christian community in Jerusalem. They encouraged rich members of the community to donate their property and money to the poor and needy.
In the painting by Masaccio we see St. Peter stretching money to a woman whose poverty is shown by the wretched dress of her child. One man, the name of his Ananias, sold part of his land in favor of the community, but secretly left himself half of the money raised for it. Saint Peter convicted him of lying to God – and Ananias immediately fell dead to the ground. Later, for the same reason, death befell Ananias’ wife, Sapphira.
