After traveling along the Norman coast, undertaken by Monet in 1882-1883, the painting “Rocks in Etretat” was created.
The artist did not stop searching for new techniques in painting, and in this work he used a relief stroke – a technique that allows to transmit glares on the sea surface, subtle vibrations of the sun’s rays, causing a sensation of heat, a transparent atmosphere of clouds.
The transfer of ephemeral, rapidly changing elements, enhances their contrast with the statics of rocks, the outlines of which have intricate shapes.
The work is kept in the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow.
