The decorative panel is a picture intended for permanent or temporary decoration of a section of the wall or ceiling, that is, it definitely builds up the living space, influences it, makes the inhabitants of this space live according to their own laws. If one does not forget that the main goal of symbolism was the construction of life according to the laws of art, according to the laws of absolute beauty, one can understand why Vrubel was so attracted to work on decorative panels, why he readily accepted orders for their creation.
The panel “Venice”, in 1893, ordered the young Dunquer couple for their new Moscow house. Vrubel wrote it on the impressions of the trip with the family of Mammoths to Italy in 1891-92, but the decorativeness he professed was so aggressive in this work that the customers rejected the panel. In fact, the story is ordinary for Vrubel. Something similar happened with the panel “Princess of Dream”, made for the All-Russian exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod.
