Pride. Engraving by Peter Brueghel

Engraving of the artist Peter Bruegel “Pride.” Pride is one of the seven biblical mortal sins or vices. Vice, in religious ethics, moral evil, consisting in the violation of the action, word or thought of the will of God. The concept of “sin” stands out from the more ancient and extramoral concept of “filth”; theology distinguishes the “original” sin of the first people, the consequences of which are inherited by their descendants. Condemnation, resentment, the desire to revenge, feeling insulted are manifestations of pride, as well as false pride in “acquired” wealth. “A man who, while convicting, hardens his neck, will suddenly be broken, and there will be no healing for him.” . “But whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.” . “Pride will come, shame will come, but with the humble – wisdom.” .
