Portrait of young spouses by Jacob Jordaens

A painting by the Flemish painter Jacob Jordaens “Portrait of a Young Couple”. The size of the painting is 125 x 93 cm, canvas, oil. This double portrait of the painter is the product of the beginning of the mature period of the creation of Jordaens.

In addition to writing paintings on religious and mythological subjects, the artist also worked in the genre of portrait, creating, mainly, family portraits. Actually, portraits, quite an interesting side of the creativity of the Flemish painter.

Usually Jordans wrote married couples, but, as a rule, with some overtones. For example, on the canvas that portrayed Surpelin’s conjugal couple in the late 1920s, the majestic posture of a stately man is not capable of misleading viewers viewing a painting.

Undoubtedly, the head of this family is a burly matron, who calmly, but not particularly elegantly, is seated in an armchair. Next to the couple, Jordaens painted a colorful parrot – an invariable attribute of such portraits, symbolizing burgher wealth and merchant vanity.
