This “Roman” portrait, permeated with mild sadness, was written from the former chambermaster of the “small court” of Grand Duchess Ekaterina Pavlovna, whom Kiprensky had already met in Tver.
He is strikingly different from other portraits of the royal dignitaries, executed by the artist, with their warmth and “intimacy”. Prince Golitsyn two years later, in 1821, will die from consumption.
