Painting of the French artist Jean Honore Fragonard “Portrait of Madame Marie-Anna Fragonard”, tondo. The portrait diameter is 56 cm, canvas, oil. In 1769, Fragonard married his pupil, the master of miniature painting Marie-Anne Girardot, who, like Fragonard, was from Grasse. Presumably the portrait was written by Fragonard between 1775 and 1780.
The form of the portrait can be considered unusual for the artist’s work; Fragonard used the tondo very rarely, since he preferred an oval shape for portraits. There is nothing pretentious about this portrait, Madame Fragonard is presented as a housewife dressed in a dark red dress, only a large pearl necklace gives this woman an accessory to a certain circle. Her dark hair, covered, like a turban, with a white kerchief. According to the statement of the brothers Gonkurov, the portrait was kept by the descendants of Jean-Honore and Marie-Anna Fragonard and was not exhibited for a long time for public viewing.
