In this – by probability, the last – a portrait of Durer’s work depicts an alchemist and adherent of the occultism with which Pirkheimer linked his deep personal grief. John Kleberger appeared suddenly in the city in the midst of the most bitter debates about the Reformation.
Soon he married the newly widowed daughter of Pirkheimer Felicia, and then suddenly disappeared. After a while, Felicia died, and the rumor for a long time attributed to Kleberger the poisoning of a young woman with some slow-acting poison.
