Portrait of Barbara Durer by Albrecht Durer

Portrait of Barbara Durer – the mother of the famous German artist Albrecht Durer. She was the daughter of the goldsmith Jerome Holper, whose Albrecht Dürer Sr. was an apprentice for 12 years.

Durer-senior only at the age of forty was able to present property for a hundred gulden, which was required to obtain the rights of the master and married the fifteen-year-old daughter of Holper – Barbara. Then, with the help of his father-in-law, he finally opened an independent workshop.

The portrait is very restrained immersed in her thoughts woman. From her image she breathes kindness and peace. She had to experience a lot of grief, out of her 18 children only 3 survived. Most of her children died in infancy, some were swept away by an epidemic of plague… But this kind woman was not embittered and desperate. The portrait is written with great love of love.

Already in his first works – Portrait of the Father and Portrait of the Mother, the young beginning artist appears as a mature master who will surprise the world with his unsurpassed masterpieces in the future.

The portrait of the mother – the beginning of the creative path and a tribute of love and gratitude to the parents for allowing their son Albrecht Durer to become an artist, identified him for studies with the famous artist Michael Wolgemuth and did not require the young man to continue the family business – to be a goldsmith. In this respect, the great artist was very lucky. Especially in comparison with Johann Gutenberg, the inventor of the printing press, who also came from the family of goldsmiths, jewelers, but whose fate was very tragic…
