The Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna is the daughter of Emperor Nikolai Pavlovich and Alexandra Feodorovna, Princess of Prussia. In 1839, Mr.. entered into a marriage with Maximilian, Duke of Leuchtenberg; died on February 9, 1876.
In the last years of the reign of Emperor Nicholas I, she began to take personal part in the supreme administration of women’s educational institutions, having in her immediate administration, among other things, the Patriotic Institute. On the death of her husband took the place of president of the Academy of Fine Arts; subsequently took the title of chairperson of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts.
