Portrait of Augustus Strindberg by Edvard Munch

Most of the early portraits were written by Munk with his friends. Later, he did not disdain and custom portraits. In addition, the artist created a series of self-portraits – a kind of “film” of his own life. Official portraits of Munch inherit the traditions of the old masters, recalling the style of Velasquez and Whistler.

Munch possessed the gift of grasping the character of man. Once he noticed that the enemies of his models would always find in their images made by his hand, “a great resemblance to the original.” In other words, the artist never sought to embellish a customer posing for him. We present to the reader the Munch portraits of playwright August Strindberg, philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche and writer Hans Jäger.
