Painter of the Early Renaissance, Cosimo Tura was the court painter of the house of d’Este, the herring of Ferrara. The composition “Pieta with Saints” is part of the altar of St. George in Ferrara.
Pieta is the mourning of Christ, who died on the cross. An indispensable participant in such compositions is the Mother of God. On her knees, the lifeless body of the Son is prostrated, next there are figures of selected saints, who sympathize with Her grief.
There is no place for beauty: the faces of all present are distorted by sorrow and suffering, and the seal of the cross is also on the face of Christ. To convey the emotional state of the characters, the artist uses the language of facial expressions and gestures, eloquently speaking about their experiences.
