The ordination is one of the sacraments of the Christian church, accompanying the ordination as any priest. Here Poussin portrayed the “first ordination” in the history of Christianity.
Christ tells the apostle Peter, kneeling before Him, that he is destined to become a stone on which He will build his church. In his left hand, the Savior holds the golden key to the gates of heaven, in his right, the iron key to the doors of the underworld.
