Josef Anton Koch is a well-known Austrian master who, after classicism with his aesthetic and artistic means of expression, came to romanticism. Koch studied in Stuttgart, and from 1795 he worked in Rome, but in 1812-1815 he was in Vienna.
The artist wrote mostly landscapes. He was a master of panoramic landscapes, for which he chose unusual natural phenomena, mountain ranges, waterfalls, fast rivers, imparting special picturesqueness, sublime beauty to his works. In the early works of Koch, the features of the classic “heroics” are often manifested.
Later, the artist began to include in the composition characters from literary works. “Mountain landscape” – one of the most famous works of Koch, performed in the artistic tradition of the time.
