Mary and Baby by Andrea Previtali

Mary and Baby by Andrea Previtali

Acquired from the Esterházy collection in 1870. Exhibited in 1968 at the exhibition “Venetian painting XV-XVIII centuries” in Warsaw, Prague, Dresden and Budapest. Previtali was a student of Giovanni Bellini. His first independent works, which reached us, were created at the turn of the XV and XVI centuries.

In the Budapest picture, besides the influence of his teacher, the influence of Cima and Conegliano is also felt. Independent in Previtali are mainly paints; the color of his picture is strong and dynamic. Until 1512 Previtali worked in Venice, then in Bergamo. The Budapest painting dates back to its Venetian period.

One of his works, located in the Bergamsk gallery, is very close in style to our picture. Previtali was not a native Venetian, as evidenced by a detailed background image reflecting the influence of the northern renaissance, which in itself is valuable. The buildings depicted in his landscapes in the background are typical Lombard buildings with arcades. The image of two types of landscape – a link to the Bible, the symbols of the Old and New Testaments.
