The Slavic cycle of paintings by the Czech modernist Alphonse Mucha was marked by the appearance of true women, as they say in the art world, Alfonsov’s ladies. It was this cycle that was characterized by Slavic motifs, lush beauties and elements of pagan culture. “Mary – Madonna Lily” – a picture from the above collection.
Unlike other works, Madonna Lily is a very touching story, tender in essence, warm and truly symbolic. The young beauty – the girl and her charm – Madonna froze in the submissive calm. The fleeting gaze of the girl speaks about employment by an interesting occupation – weaving a wreath of burgundy grass. Her little fingers intertwined with the stems, skillful movements, she connects the flower – to the flower plant crown. “Do not bother me, do not say, do not breathe…” – say her little brown eyes. The author placed his Madonna in the lush thickets of white lilies. Virgin – Mary turned out weightless and warm. Her nimbus is a tangle of white flower sparks.
A narrow forehead is covered with straw strands, and each line comes to naught and is lost in a blurred background. A similar arrangement of accents on the smoothness of the strokes and the absence of sharp transitions is characteristic of Modernity. Who, if not the Fly, know about the laws of modernist features. This is no longer Modernism with indecisive steps, but a genuine, ingrained Modern with its symbolism, for example, the image of Madonna, as a symbol of purity and innocence, the girl at the base of her feet, naive and open to the world. Both the Christian Virgin and the child are the cups of the birth of human life.
As for Lily, this is a separate story, which also goes to the pagan beginning and Orthodox culture. In Christianity, the white lily symbolizes purity and purity. Moreover, each element, stem, leaf, carry their own meaning. Apparently, the author flipped through quite a few books on history, drawing inspiration from ancient rites. “Maria – Madonna of Lilies” is a colorful work, and Alfons took extremely warm and light paints. Whitewashed in a mixture with pear and peach flowers created an aura of a late evening, summer and pacifying evening.
Despite the abstract filled, the plot takes the viewer to the field. Bunch of lilies resemble grass sheaves, many of them, they are thick and fresh. A piece of heaven is encrusted with a holy image of the Virgin praying over the main characters. The work radiates a golden glow, like an iconography with a hint of the humanization of feelings and the basic laws of chastity in the guise of St. Mary and the village girl. The true Slavic theme is masterfully conveyed by Alphonse the Fly in lush painting and bold brushstroke, a kind of narration and a manner that is recognizable and different.
