The artist was fond of ancient Greek culture, and his canvases, drawings and watercolors were devoted to religious, historical and mythological themes. In 1870, Moreau completed the painting Hesiod and Muse, based on ancient Greek myths.

Hesiod was the first Greek poet around 700 BC. er According to him, he was born in Kim in Eolid, and then his father, being an impoverished trader, moved to the village of Askra near Mount Helikon. All this influenced the fact that the boy grew up a poet. He was a professional in the performance of ethnic songs. In the prologue of Theogony, written by Hesiod, it was said that he was inspired by the Muse, who came to him when he herded sheep and told him to speak on their behalf.

In the picture we see those sitting on the cliff of Hesiod with the muse. They admire the beautiful nature, the sea and the seagulls flying over it. Hesiod holds a shepherd’s staff in his hands, he is dressed in a red-colored chlamydah and a raincoat, thrown over his head. Muse, spreading his pinkish wings, sits next to him. At the foot of the cliff lies a shepherd’s dog and glances at his master.

The picture shows a low horizon, and therefore the sky occupies a large space. It is a beautiful blue color with small white clouds. On the horizon, you can see the grayish-bluish ruins of the temple. The cliff is made in warm brownish colors. Characters are the brightest spot in the picture. Their clothes, red, yellow and pink colors stand out against the background color of the picture. “Hesiod and Muse” – a very beautiful picture, made with clean bright colors. It conveys the feeling of freshness of the sea and causes positive emotions. The painting is in the Gustave Moreau Museum in Paris, France.
