
Dali’s favorite model was his wife Gala. Many believed that she suppressed Dali with her phenomenal energy. Her first husband was the poet Paul Eluard, who said that Gala “is capable of glazing the walls.” Later, the wits replaced the “walls” with “bank safes”, hinting at Gala’s ability to conduct tough financial affairs.
Dali wrote not only recognizable, almost realistic images of Gala, as, for example, in “The Portrait of Gala with Lobster”, 1949, but put her face in paintings of religious content and semi-abstract compositions – such as “The Apotheosis of the Dollar”, 1965 and “Galatea spheres “.
