This painting is one of the most striking works of the painter. But it conceals a mystery in itself. It is difficult enough to resist the charm of this wonderful portrait. His power is really intriguing. It helps to awaken the imagination, the desire to guess the characters. The viewer wants to come up with a story about the life of this family.

The longer we look at these faces, the more difficult it is to understand their expressions. In them, a shadow is clearly visible, which is inexplicable. But this is the actual side of the matter, not a picturesque one.

The image created by Van Dyck is surprising. The artist was able to show that a person is imbued with happiness. But it is precisely this that presupposes a seal. Somewhere in the depths lies the alarm, the premonition of trouble, which may very well happen very soon. Such a feeling that a fragile happiness is in trouble. A man tries to protect her from a child and wife. He is going to take the whole blow only for himself. We want, by all means, to find out who is in front of us. We strive to understand this man with a pale face and a gaze of mildness. He leaned on the back of the luxurious leather chair.

This drama of love is really impressive. The child and the woman are secondary characters. The portrait center is a man. If the viewer is very attentive, he will even be able to see that his figure is singled out even compositionally. It is written as if in another space. Of course, it has a touch with the one in which the other two characters of the picture are written, but its existence is completely separate.

If we were given the right to know who was before us, we could find out whether the artist was able to foresee the danger that, like a black stain, hung over this family. Or maybe he, like many portraitists, in vain attributed false fears to this father of the family.

In the portrait you can feel the sad look of the artist, who from the side watched the state of the soul of his heroes. In this creation the duality of the artist’s soul was reflected. She pursued him throughout her life.
