The romantic character of Kiprensky was distinguished by great breadth, the “reckless Orestes” did not want to enclose themselves in any rigid framework – both in life and in creativity. So sometimes he did not like the fact that others consider him only a portraitist – even if outstanding, and he began to be burdened by his own “portraitism”, trying to make shoots beyond the boundaries of this genre.
For example, in the genre picture, suggesting a living story, a story, a theatrical scene. Then things appeared like the picture “EA Teleshova in the role of Zelia”, created somewhere at the junction of the traditional portrait and genre “gizmos”.
This “mezheumochnost” allowed more freely to handle the methods of portrait writing, varying psychological motivations. In addition, the series includes the work “The Young Gardener”, 1817, about which the notorious P. Svinyin wrote in his book “Sights of St. Petersburg and its environs”: “The drawing is correct, the colors are fresh, transparent.” This is an example of the successes acquired by the young Russian artist Kiprensky in Italy, from where he sent this picture recently. “
