A girl in a poppy wreath by Orest of Kiprensky

The girl depicted in the portrait is a six-year-old Italian Mariuccia, who took a special place in the life of Kiprensky. This is one of the most unusual love stories. At the first arrival of the artist in Italy, he was looking for a model for his painting. The choice fell on a small Italian girl Mariucciu, whose mother did not follow the girl, led a disorderly lifestyle.

Kiprensky felt sorry for the girl, and he took the hottest part in her life. He took Mariuchch to himself, brought up as a native child. And when he had to go home, he put the girl in an educational house at the monastery. And only after 17 years, having experienced many sufferings, failures, disappointments, he returned to Italy and married her. Of course, this could not be called love in the generally recognized sense. Kiprensky hoped with the help of a young girl to make a new life, and Mariuccia was grateful to the artist for his patronage, for saving her from poverty and hunger.

However, their hopes were not justified. Happiness lasted only three months. Yes, and it was impossible to call happiness – Kiprensky fell ill and he was getting worse, and Mariuscia was afraid of him, he was not clear to her. The portrait of the girl breathes with tenderness, trustful sincerity. Symbolically, the image of flowers is a poppy symbol of sleep and night, and carnation is a symbol of innocence. It is felt that the portrait is inspired by unforgettable canvases of the Renaissance.
