One of the main places in the work of Bellini was occupied with the theme of the earthly path of Christ. Most often, the master stopped his attention on the subjects connected with the Savior’s crosses and the events preceding them. The early “Crucifixion” of the master is overloaded with details, there are many minor actors in them. But over time, Bellini concentrates on the figure of Christ.
Minor characters are dissolved. Leaves Bellini only the figures of Our Lady and the Apostle John at the foot of the cross. The Crucifixion, ca. 1505 – one of the best works of the late Bellini. In addition to Christ, there is not a single living soul here. Only the skulls, tombstones and the city in the background.
Often, the artist wrote scenes of the Baptism and Transfiguration of the Lord. You can recall with reference to our topic and his such works as “Dinner at Emmaus” and “Descent into Hell.” The last episode was not included in the canonical text of the Bible, but it is described in some detail in the early Christian apocrypha. They tell us that Christ visited hell to free the souls of those who expected His coming – including the souls of Adam and Eve.
