In the work of Richter, the traditions of realism are combined with the late phenomena of informal painting. These combinations of opposites gave rise to skepticism in the artist in relation to everything once and for all established in art.

The rebellious art of Gustave Courbet, the revolutionary light and color solutions on his canvases prompted Gerhard Richter to create a picture that is called “Courbet”. Thus, he expressed his attitude to the work of the great artist.
