Bridges Nihonbashi and Edobashi by Utagawa Hiroshige

This is the first engraving of thirty, dedicated to the summer season. Like the spring series, the summer begins with the image of the Nihonbashi bridge. This engraving shows the lower course of the Edobashigawa River and its banks from the northwest of the Nihonbashi Bridge. Between Nihonbashi and Edobashi was located the famous fish market of Uogashi.

The viewer looks toward the southern shore of Nihonbashi Gava, along which stretch wooden buildings, alternating with warehouses covered with white plaster. The engraving depicts only the upper part of the Nihonbashi bridge, it can be recognized by the tops on the pillars of the banister in the form of a flame, but the upper part is cut off by the edge of the sheet. On the river there are boats loaded with various goods. As in other sheets of the series, the composition is based on a sharp contrast of plans.

In the foreground there is the upper part of the bridge and the basket carried by the peddler on a crossbar similar to the rocker arm, but it is not visible. In the basket, mackerel, which began fishing in late March – early April. It is depicted the early morning, when the sun only appears from behind the horizon. Recycling the color of the second variant of the engraving was primarily focused on trying to transfer the volume of the railing of the railing of the bridge in the foreground. When printing, this is achieved by introducing a darker shade of color. The kartush becomes multicolored.
